Why does Caesars matter to Vegas sports history?

Before the domes and arenas, Caesars made Las Vegas a sports city on purpose. It staged boxing, a Formula One race, and even outdoor hockey [1]. Today's Las Vegas Grand Prix runs past it on the Strip [2].
